How to find a profitable KDP niche (a step-by-step check)

Updated Oct 9, 2026 · 6 min read

Most books that never sell were written for a niche that was never checked. The good news: you can check a niche in about fifteen minutes, before you spend weeks on the book. This guide is the routine we recommend, whatever tool you use.

What makes a niche worth publishing in

A niche is worth your time when three things are true at the same time:

  • People search for it: shoppers type it into Amazon often enough that a new book can be found.
  • The first page is beatable: the top books are not all giants with thousands of reviews.
  • Books in it sell at a price that pays you: low prices with high print costs can leave almost nothing.

The 15-minute niche check

  1. Start from a specific phrase, not a broad topic. "Anxiety workbook for teens" tells you much more than "anxiety".
  2. Search it on Amazon in the Books department and look only at the first page: that is where buyers decide.
  3. For the top 10 books, note the Best Sellers Rank (BSR), the number of ratings and the price.
  4. Look at the ratings first. If almost every book has thousands, a new book will struggle. If several have under 100, newcomers are getting in.
  5. Look at the BSR next. A first page where many books have a low BSR (a smaller number is better) means the phrase sells.
  6. Check the price range. Note what buyers already pay and whether that price leaves you a royalty after printing.
  7. Read the titles. If every title says the same thing, look for the angle nobody covers: an audience, a format or a level.

Signs of a good niche

  • Several first-page books with modest ratings but a decent BSR: demand without fortress-like competition.
  • Titles that leave an obvious gap (for example, every book is for adults and none is for teens).
  • Related searches that are just as specific: room for a series.

Signs to walk away

  • Every top book has thousands of ratings and has been there for years.
  • Most first-page books have a weak BSR: few people buy, whatever the competition.
  • The phrase relies on a brand, character or famous name: check trademarks before anything else.
