What Amazon's Best Sellers Rank (BSR) means for KDP publishers

Updated Oct 9, 2026 · 5 min read

Best Sellers Rank is the most useful public number on an Amazon book page, and the most misread. Here is what it is, how to read it, and the mistakes to avoid.

What BSR is

BSR is a book's position compared with other books in the same store, based on recent sales. Rank 1 sold best recently; a bigger number means fewer recent sales. A book also gets a rank inside each of its categories, which is why the same book can be #1 in a small category and #45,000 in Books overall.

Why it moves so much

  • It is updated often and weighs recent sales heavily, so one good day can lift a book a long way.
  • A book that sells rarely can jump after a single sale, then slide back over the following days.
  • Print books, Kindle books and audiobooks are ranked in separate lists, so compare like with like.

What BSR can tell you

  • Whether a book sells regularly: a rank that stays low over weeks means steady sales.
  • Which of two books in the same store sells more right now.
  • Whether a whole first page sells, which tells you if a keyword has buyers.

What it cannot tell you

Amazon does not publish sales numbers. Any "sales from BSR" figure, in any tool, is an estimate from a model, so it is best read as a range and used to compare books rather than as an exact count. A single snapshot can also mislead: always look at the rank over several days.

How to use BSR well

  1. Look at the rank over time, not once. A week of history tells you far more than one number.
  2. Compare books in the same store and format.
  3. Use category ranks to find small categories where a modest number of sales reaches the top.
