How to write a KDP book description that sells the click
Updated Oct 13, 2026 · 5 min read
By the time a shopper reads your description, your cover and title have done their job: the shopper is interested. The description has one task left, which is to remove doubt. It does that with a clear promise and easy reading, not with long paragraphs.
A structure that works for most books
- Hook: one or two short lines that name the reader and the problem or wish. Only the first lines show before "Read more", so they carry the most weight.
- What is inside: three to six bullets with concrete details (number of puzzles, topics covered, page size, level).
- Who it is for: one line that lets the right buyer say "that is me" and the wrong one move on.
- Call to action: a plain closing line, such as inviting the reader to start today.
Formatting
- Short paragraphs of one to three lines read far better on a phone than one block of text.
- KDP's description field accepts simple formatting such as bold, italics and lists; its help pages list what is supported.
- Use bold for a few key lines only. When everything is bold, nothing is.
- Preview the result on the live product page on a phone, where most shoppers will see it.
What to leave out
Amazon's content guidelines have the final word on what a description may contain.
- Claims you cannot prove, reviews or quotes you do not have permission to use, and anything about price or promotions.
- Other authors' names, brand names and trademarks.
- Keyword lists pasted at the end: write for the reader, and put spare phrases in your seven keyword boxes.
Checklist before you publish
- Do the first two lines make sense on their own?
- Can a reader tell in ten seconds what is inside and who it is for?
- Does every detail match the book (page count, size, age range)?
- Have you read it aloud once and removed anything you would not say to a customer?
